[UPDATE] Woman in Stable Condition Following Grisly Crash

[UPDATE 10 p.m.] A woman who was hospitalized following a grisly midday accident in Southbury Wednesday was listed in stable condition at Saint Mary’s Hospital later that evening, hospital officials said.

Jillian Zampaglione, 30, of Winsted, was rear ended by a tractor-trailer, causing her vehicle to propel some 200 feet on Interstate 84 west near exit 16 around 11:53 a.m., according to a state police report. Police originally said Wednesday that she may have suffered life-threatening injuries.

The accident happened when a tractor-trailer driven by Jaspal Singh, 39, of Hyde Park, N.Y., stopped abruptly in the left center lane of the four-lane highway because of state Department of Transportation construction, the report states.

The tractor-trailer plowed into Zampaglione’s vehicle, totaling the 2008 Kia Rondo, according to the report.

Zampaglione’s car propelled into three other vehicles in front of her - one car and two tractor-trailers, the report states. The collision totaled the car driven by Diane Drakeley, 71, of Southbury, and caused minor damage to the two tractor-trailer; Drakeley was transported to Waterbury Hospital with minor injuries, the report states.

The accident remains under investigation.

[UPDATE 5:30 p.m.] After hours of cleanup following a severe noontime accident, I-84 West in Southbury is completely cleared and all lanes of traffic are open, according to Troop ‘A’ in Southbury.

Updated injury information and individuals involved in the accident have yet to be released.

[UPDATE: 3:45 p.m.] Several people were transported to area hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to severe, following this afternoon’s accident on I-84 West in Southbury.

According to State police spokeswoman Sgt. Donna Tadiello, an unknown number of victims were transported to Waterbury Hopsital and St. Mary’s Hospital, some with severe, life threatening injuries.

Two lanes of the highway have been reopened, and one lane and the shoulder remain closed as of 3:45 p.m., according to Tadiello.

[UPDATE: 1:30 p.m.] The accident blocking the majority of I-84 West in Southbury involves multiple tractor-trailers and two vehicles, most of which sustained heavy damage in the crash.

State police and the Southbury Fire Department are currently on the scene of the accident, which occurred just after the exit 16 off ramp of I-84 West.

Southbury FD has just cleared the highway, although clean up still continues, according to Southbury Firefighter Lieutenant Jason Decremer.

There was an extremely large debris field as a result of the accident. Occupants in one of the vehicles required extrication by the fire department.

There are injuries, but the extent of those injuries are not currently known, according to Decremer.

An accident in the vicinity of exit 16 of I-84 West has closed all westbound lanes at this hour.

According to police, the accident involved at least one tractor-trailer and all lanes are blocked, as of 12:30 p.m.

No information on injuries has been reported.
