In a Music Together mixed age class, twelve children and their parents or caregivers (nanny, babysitter, grandparent) meet for 45 minutes each week for ten weeks to experience new songs, chants, movement activities, instrumental jam sessions and good old fashioned fun!
Children have many opportunities to create and to play—making up rhythm patterns, new words to songs, and movements to express a sound. Some children simply stare and “study”the activity as they absorb the musically rich environment. Others sing, play, and dance freely because they know the songs and chants from the songbook and recording they take home. All experience a comfortable, encouraging environment that respects individual temperaments and learning styles.
In our Babies Classes, parents or caregivers bond with their babies through music making activities. Adults learn to observe, imitate and follow their baby’s musical cues, understand what musical expression in infants looks like and gather a “toolbox of techniques” to play musically at home. Adults and babies have musical conversations, play, sing and dance while learning more about baby’s growth and development in the first year and how to enhance growth and development through music making.
Music Together is proud to be celebrating 25 years of helping families to nurture and develop children’s natural enthusiasm for music making. Founded in 1987, the research-based program was created for the Center for Music and Young Children (CMYC) by Mr. Ken Guilmartin and Dr. Lili Levinowitz. Currently Music Together serves over 2000 communities nationwide and internationally.
Music Together is a program for children and parents and caregivers. “We really want to help parents and caregivers understand the importance of music in early childhood and their role as musical models, regardless of their musical ability,” says Julie Capuano, Director of Music Together of Monroe/Newtown. “It’s exciting when they are able to make musical observations such as their child is singing on the resting tone or doing a new movement like one we just did in class. I feel like they are learning right alongside their child.”
