Audubon Center in Southbury Seeking Donations During May 6 & 7 "Give Local" Campaign

“We were ecstatic to exceed our fundraising expectations during the inaugural 2013 Give Local campaign,” stated Leslie Kane, executive director of the Audubon Center at Bent of the River in Southbury. “We welcomed many new contributors to our non-profit environmental and wildlife conservation center, and we sincerely hope to duplicate our much-appreciated high level of contributions during the 2014 ‘Give Local’ campaign.”

Kane remarked that the Audubon Center at Bent of the River, which is open year-round and funded in large part by contributions from private donors in the region, will be participating in the 2014 “Give Local Greater Waterbury & Litchfield Hills” fundraising campaign from noon on Tuesday, May 6 to noon on Wednesday, May 7. The 24-hour online giving campaign is once again being organized by the Connecticut Community Foundation and “The Bent” will receive 94% of every donation after a 6% processing charge. All donations for the Bent of the River can be made through a special website created by the non-profit Foundation, www.givelocalccf.org.

“People found the ease of donating electronically through the website very inviting. We learned from people in the Southbury community who had not previously donated to The Bent that the ease of donating on line made donating quick, easy and safe. Folks can make their donations with the click of their mouse. People I’ve known for years who had never donated were eager and happy to donate with such ease and during a designated time frame,” stated Kane.

This spring’s 24-hour Give Local Greater Waterbury & Litchfield Hills fundraising campaign is perfectly timed to coordinate with the most important time here at the Bent, the peak of our bird migration! We hope that it is also well-timed for individuals, companies and organizations to make tax-deductible gifts to their favorite non-profit organizations. Kane commented that, “Many local people have heard of the Audubon Center at Bent of the River but many are not aware we depend on donations from individuals, organizations and corporations to keep our land accessible to birders, hikers, nature lovers, walkers and runners year-round. Every dollar donated to The Bent during the Give Local will go directly toward maintaining this magnificent natural treasure within our community. Every dollar we receive will be generously matched by the Connecticut Community Foundation is working to make sure that many of the donations made during Give Local will be matched through the Foundation and make the Bent eligible for matching funds from a national pool.” If donors spend some time on givelocalCCF.org website they can time their donations to match with qualifying bonuses and make their donation go even further!  All donations are 100% tax deductible.

The mission of the not-for-profit Audubon Center is to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife and their habitats. Located along the Pomperaug River and bordering Little Pootatuck Brook, the Audubon Center at Bent of the River nature center and sanctuary at 185 East Flat Hill Road in the Southbury hamlet of South Britain is a private organization that protects over 700 acres of numerous natural ecosystems, habitats, un-fragmented forest, grasslands, meadows, swamps and a portion of the Pomperaug River. More than 460 acres of the Bent were bequeathed to the National Audubon Society in 1993 by the late Althea Clark, a devoted naturalist, conservationist and land preservation visionary.
