Southbury Has a Whole "Lotto" Jackpot Winning Going On!

The CT Lottery’s $4,800,000 Lotto jackpot was won on a single ticket purchased by James Owen of Southbury for the October 1 drawing.  His win marks the second time in just two years that a Lotto jackpot has been won by a Southbury resident.  Arthur Hylwa, Jr. of Southbury won a $3,600,000 Lotto jackpot on February 25, 2011, on a ticket purchased at Kiran Mart, 1450 Southford Road.

Owen’s Lotto “Quick Pick” ticket contained the numbers 9 - 22 - 31 - 38 - 40 - 43, a perfect match to the winning numbers drawn Tuesday, October 1.

“I finally got around to scanning my ticket in a Ticket Checker on Sunday.  The message said, ‘Congratulations Jackpot!’” Owen told Lottery officials.  “I knew I won big, but I didn’t know how much.  When I got home, I told my fiancée, Joy, ‘I WON LOTTO!’  She didn’t believe me, of course.  So we went to the CT Lottery website (ctlottery.org) and saw we won $4,800,000.  We laughed, we cried—we were shocked!  We just kept checking the numbers, over and over.”

CT’s Lotto jackpot is payable as a 21-year annuity or a one-time cash lump-sum.  Owen claimed the jackpot’s cash lump-sum prize for $3,851,593 (before taxes) at Lottery headquarters in Rocky Hill with Joy “all smiles” and happily by his side.

“Now we can pay off the mortgage, pay off some bills, do some work around the house, and take a vacation!  In our thirteen years together, Joy and I have always been working and have never been on a vacation together,” Owen said.

A Lottery retailer since 1997, Southbury Convenience Mobil Station, located at 997 Main Street in Southbury, will receive a $10,000 selling bonus from the CT Lottery.

The overall chance of winning a prize in Lotto is 1 in 39.3.  The chance of winning the jackpot is 1 in approximately 7.1 million.
