Memory Lane in Southbury: Kelly's & Oak Tree Inn

It was most recently called "Misfitz," but longtime Southbury residents may know this place better as Kelly's or Kelly's Steak House and, further back, Oak Tree Inn.

I stopped into Hine Brothers Thursday to see if anyone there had more information about this historic building that has been vacant for about 10 years and which is now in a state of obvious disrepair.

Ken Hine, whose father and uncles founded Hine Brothers in 1946, stood behind the counter looking out at the old Oak Tree Inn and began tracing its history with the help of one of his employees, Beth Bruce.

The two remember it being something before Misfitz, but they couldn't remember the name. "Saddle" something, they surmise.

Beth remembers playing pool at Kelly's and Ken recalls that there used to be country music on Saturday nights, maybe about 50 years ago.

There are even rumors that it may have been a brothel way back when...

What are your memories of the place?
