New Film Series Will Bring Movies to Southbury

The Southbury Film Commission have announced the creation of a Film Series called “Southbury Sunday Night at the Movies”, that will showcase independent films beginning this month.

The film commission has partnered with the CT Film Festival and the Heritage Hotel for this project, which will take place on five Sundays from October to December.  The movies will be screened at the Heritage Hotel in a tiered seating venue that can accommodate 100 people.

The idea for a film series evolved after the Southbury Economic Development Commission’s 2011 Shopper’s Survey revealed that over 75 percent of respondents felt the town needed a movie theater, according to the Office of the First Selectman. 

Though it is not a traditional movie theater, the film commission hopes residents and visitors will take the opportunity to enjoy a Southbury night out on the town.

“Attendees can create a dinner and movie night,” said Anne Armeno, Chairman of the Southbury Film Commission. “Grab loved ones and friends, have dinner at one of Southbury’s fine restaurants, then come and join us and see a film, but save room for snacks.” 

There will be a series of five films shown Oct. 14, Oct. 28, Nov. 11, Nov. 2 and Dec. 9. Feature films are as follows:

• Oct. 14: “Privacy”
  ‘An Up To Date Story of Suspense in the Spirit of Hitchcock and Polanski.’
• Oct. 28: “Black Tulip”
  ‘A modern portrait of Afghanistan that captures the current plight and resilience of its people.’
• Nov. 11: “Confidence Game”
  ‘A jaw dropping street level, 360-degree view of systemic malfeasance and widespread corruption.’
• Nov. 25: “Chico & Rita”
  ‘From Havana to New York, Paris, Hollywood and Las Vegas, two passionate individuals battle impossible odds to unite in music and love.’
• Dec. 9:  “Celebrity Comedy Shorts”
  ‘Edgy, Provocative, Hysterical, Off the Wall….you name it.’

Trailers of these movies can be viewed on the Southbury Film Commission website. All films are independent films and do not have a rating assigned to them. The CT Film Festival recommends that these films are suggested for adult audiences and not appropriate for children.

The Heritage Hotel will offer concession items for sale at the event. Items such as soft drinks, water, wine, beer, popcorn, candy and a cheese and cracker platter will be sold. No outside food or beverage will be permitted.

“We are proud and excited to bring the film series to Southbury, and to provide first run entertainment,” said Judith Kalfon, Heritage Hotel General Manager. “The partnership between the CT Film Festival, the Southbury Film Commission and the hotel will enable us to show thought provoking contemporary film selections that will appeal to the Southbury community.”

A ticket service has been set up by the CT Film Festival to enable patrons to purchase tickets for one film showing or the entire series. Tickets will also be sold at the door. General Admission is $12 per film; seniors and students are $10 per film.
