Sudden Storm Knocks Out Power for Fifth of Southbury [UPDATED]

Reports of minor flooding and trees and branches down across town.

Nearly 20 percent of Southbury was left without power and several roads impassable after a quick but severe wind and rain storm swept through the area Tuesday afternoon.

The power was out on a section of Main Street as of 8 p.m., with branches fallen across the roadway and some minor flooding, as well.

A reader also reported a tree down on Main Street near the Gap and that River Road was nearly impassable due to downed limbs.

Region 15 schools are closed Wednesday, May 28, due to the storm, power outages, and potentially unsafe road conditions for pedestrians and drivers, according to the school website.

More than 1,800 residents and businesses reported being out of power, according to CL&P, accounting for approximately 18 percent of the town’s 9,900 customers.

As of 8 p.m., neighboring Bridgewater is 100 percent out of power.
