Sandy Hook School Psychologist Honored

The Sandy Hook School Psychologist was among the 26 killed in the Dec. 14, 2012, school shooting.

Mary Sherlach, killed in Sandy Hook School on Dec. 14, 2012, received a standing ovation Monday night as the Trumbull Town Council unanimously approved renaming the Trumbull Counseling Center after her.

Her husband, William Sherlach, accepted it in her place.

Mary Sherlach and Principal Dawn Hochsprung were meeting with other faculty members when they heard gunshots. Hochsprung and Sherlach immediately left the room, rushed to the source of the sounds, and encountered and confronted Adam Lanza, the shooter. He shot and killed both women, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Before the approval, First Selectman Tim Herbst said Sherlach gave her life for the students and teachers and deserved the honor. He added that William Sherlach was an example of strength.

Herbst gave more extensive remarks in his statement on the town Website.

Town Council Chairman Carl Massaro Jr., who usually does not vote because of his position, cast his affirmative along with his colleagues Tuesday night.

They did not comment, but Massaro simply said, "The motion is carried and the counseling center will be renamed in the memory of Mary Sherlach."

The Town Council chamber then burst into applause, which William Sherlach stood and accepted.

An official renaming ceremony will be held in the spring, Herbst has said.
