As we get into the middle of the summer here at YMCA Camp Oakasha, one of the things that we work to do as a staff is make everyday new for our campers. We want to make sure that they still feel a sense of adventure when they come to camp, whether they've been here for three days, three weeks, or three years. The thunderstorms we had on Wednesday definitely made it seem like an adventure, with staff leading songs so loudly that we covered up the sounds of the storm!
Many campers say that their favorite camp adventures happen during Nature Time. We are fortunate enough to be surrounded by woods and the campers and their counselors go on adventures daily! We've spotted turkeys, turtles, deer, squirrels, toads, newts, and rabbits. This summer the campers have really enjoyed building their own trails and making the woods more accessible. But, their all time favorite Nature Adventure is fort building. They've built some really intricate and awesome forts!
Canoeing also provides a sense of adventure, especially for those campers with a more active imagination. I've overheard many campers making up their own pirate songs while paddling around the island in the lake. Many campers also celebrate the first time they reach the top of the climbing tower as an adventure. Thanks to the popularity of the Hunger Games Trilogy, campers are taking Archery more seriously this summer, as well.
Whether it's fort building in the woods or turtle capturing in a canoe, our campers leave each day having tried something new. Sometimes it's not the physical journey that they go on, but the ride their imagination takes them on that proves to be the most adventurous!
