Buy a Charm; Help the Ambulance Association

The Southbury Juniorettes are helping the Southbury Ambulance Association (SAA) raise funds and awareness of the SAA’s efforts toward saving lives by making Southbury a Heart Safe Community.

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Juniorettes will be selling heart charm necklaces for $2 each, Saturday, February 5, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Stop & Shop in the Southbury Plaza.  100% of the money raised will be donated to the SAA.

According to the SAA, a friend, family member or bystander is most likely to witness the onset of a cardiac event.  A citizen trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can initiate care on the scene, dial 911 and those trained in using automated external defibrillators (AEDs) can continue to assist the person in distress.  “Publicly located AEDs further increase the rate of survival,” said Geralyn Hoyt, President of SAA.  “The sooner care is provided in a cardiac event, the better the chance of survival.”

“The American Heart Association tells us heart disease is the leading cause of death for both women and men in the United States, with women accounting for nearly 50% of heart disease deaths,” explains Juniorette, Co-President, Liza Flaherty.  “As a group of young women, the Juniorettes chose this project to help educate the public and support the Southbury Ambulance Association.”

In their efforts to make Southbury a Heart Safe Community, SAA urges residents to take a CPR class.  The proceeds from the purchase of the heart necklaces will assist SAA in their continued Community Education Programs and help to make Southbury a healthier community.
