Stamp Collecting: Why It's Valuable

Did you collect stamps when you were little? How about now? Our resident treasure hunter snagged stamps at an estate sale and discovered something valuable along the way (but maybe not in the way you think).

It's probably happened to you before. You go to a tag or estate sale and see something that looks like it might be valuable.

So you immediately start searching the Internet on your phone for said collectible. (Remember when we didn't have phones that could do that and just had to take a wild chance?")

But for resident Urban Archeologist Greg Van Antwerp, it's usually not about monetary value.

"Every time I go on a “dig” and I am lucky enough to find an attic or basement door to the past, my hope is to discover something rare and valuable," he wrote in Found: A Fortune in Stamps? "The truth is — it’s rare that I find something valuable. Fortunately, more often than not, I find something with an intrinsic value."

Besides his fascination with attics and estate sales that qualify as "digs," Greg is also a fan of stamps.

"It’s hard to shake the allure of stamps," he said in his blog. "Even when they just sit there doing nothing they look valuable. Maybe it’s because they resemble currency (and are a form of it), and maybe because their detail gives them a distinct look of rare miniature masterpieces."

Of course, value comes in different forms. Read the rest of the story and see some unique stamps by clicking here.
