Obituary: Charles R. Marcoux, 77, of Southbury

Marcoux spent years as an attorney and served in the US Army in Korea.

Chick Marcoux of Southbury, CT died July 22 in Waterbury Hospital, Waterbury, CT. The cause of death was congestive heart failure.

Mr. Marcoux was born July 14, 1935 in Bristol, CT. He was educated at Niagara University and Georgetown University Law School and was admitted to the Virginia Bar in 1962.

He was commissioned as second lieutenant in the US Army in 1956 and served in Korea from 1957-58 as a Staff Officer and Intelligence Platoon Leader on the DMZ.

After graduation from law school, Mr. Marcoux was employed as a trial attorney in the Fraud Division at the Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington DC. In 1965, he moved with his wife Kathryn and four children to the Cleveland area when he took a position with the interstate trucking concern Leaseway Transportation Corporation in Beachwood, OH. Over the next 20 years, Mr. Marcoux rose in the company from Legal Counsel in 1965 to General Counsel in 1968, continuing on to become Chief Administration Officer and Vice Chairman & Director in 1978, and President & Chief Operating Officer in 1982. He left Leaseway in 1985 due to health concerns.

In addition to his career at Leaseway, Mr. Marcoux worked tirelessly on behalf of Cleveland public radio and the then fledgling station WCPN. He joined the WCPN Board in its early days, rising to chair the board in the late 1980’s. During that time working closely with community and thought leaders, Mr. Marcoux guided and grew the station, building the board and developing its programming and fundraising to help create a much loved area resource.

After leaving Leaseway, Mr. Marcoux joined the Mahler Company of Fairlawn, NJ, a company specializing in executive development programs where he served as faculty program director from 1988-2000. In his later years, he and his wife Kathryn retired to Block Island, RI where Mr. Marcoux served his community in a number of capacities, notably as a guiding force in the Block Island Medical Center.

Mr. Marcoux is survived by his wife of 52 years, the former Kathryn Chartier, and four children: twin daughters Susan (Juliana Luecking) and Michele, (Andrew Burgess), sons Ted (Alison Shames), and Christopher (Grace Parisi), and five grandchildren. Survivors also include brothers Jerald and Dennis, both of Bristol, CT, and Joseph of West Hartford, CT. He was predeceased by his brother Robert.

A memorial and celebration of Chick’s life will be held at the Southbury Funeral Home of Munson-Lovetere, 235 St. North, on Saturday July 28, 2012 from 1 - 4 p.m. Burial of Chick's ashes will be buried in Island Cemetery in the fall.
