Obituary: Kenyon Cook

Kenyon Cook dies at the age of 94.

Kenyon Cook, a resident at Evergreen Woods in North Branford, former resident of Madison and Heritage Village in Southbury, died Thursday morning, Feb. 23, 2012. He was born on April 30, 1918, to the late Mary Kenyon Cook and William Thomas Cook.

Cook attended New Rochelle, NY, High School and graduated in 1940 from Williams College. He was a member of the Williams swim team, undefeated in three seasons during his participation; competing in the 440 and 880 events. He was a member of the Psi Epsilon fraternity. After college he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served in the Pacific theater during World War II and rose to the rank of Major.

He later worked in banking and then as a teacher of mathematics. Among his many friends he was known for his passion for and encyclopedic knowledge of the music and artists, famous and obscure, of the Big Band era. He was an active member of Christ Church in Pelham Manor, NY and served for several decades as a deacon in charge of choosing and training the Episcopal acolytes.

Cook was married to a Wellesley graduate, Caroline Warner of Chevy Chase, Maryland. They had two children, before her death in 1953. He is survived by his second wife, Betty Evans Cook,; by his children, George Warner Cook and Rosemary Kenyon Cook; by his sister Marilyn Cook Sale as well as by Mrs. Sale’s children and grandchildren.

A gathering to honor Ken’s life will be held at Evergreen Woods, 88 Notch Hill Road, North Branford on Tuesday, March 6, 2012, from 4 - 6 p.m.
