Upcoming elections
In my opinion, most of the rhetoric back and forth is missing the "elephant in the house", to wit, 70% of our tax money goes to Region 15, and both the Republican Party and Democratic Party continue to put forth nominees for the Board of Education who have done nothing, absolutely nothing, to rein in the spending of the Region 15 education empire. I don't blame Dr.l Sippy for attempting to garner all possible financial support for his organization; I blame Ms. Janet Butkus and the rest of the Board of Education for not exercising one iota of fiscal responsibility to the taxpayers. The First Selectman has little or no say in what transpires at the BOE meetings, and he/she does not control Planning and Zoning, or Inland Wetlands decisions either. These three organizations have an overwhelming influence on the quality of life, and cost of living, here in Southbury, so while I agree that we want to have a "leader' that we can trust to have the best interests of Southbury in mind, the real issue is who do we elect for the BOE who will not roll over and rubberstamp every Region 15 request, but who will actually take into account the 62% of the taxpayers who do not currently have children in our school system.
