Southbury Cinema Hearing Set for Today [UPDATED]

The Southbury Zoning Commission will meet today, Feb. 12. On the agenda is the continued hearing on the proposed Southbury movie theater.

When I first heard the weather forecast for this week, I thought the snow would surely fall on Wednesday, given the past month of Southbury Zoning Commission meeting postponements or cancellations, some due to acts of nature.

First, a large crowd of people showed up at the Jan. 8 meeting — too large of a crowd for the room where the meeting was taking place. Rather than turn people away that night, the meeting was rescheduled.

On Jan. 15, the presentation from the applicant took up the bulk of the meeting and the public didn't have a chance to speak. So the hearing was continued until Jan. 22.

The Jan. 22 meeting at Pomperaug High School was cancelled after a roof fire broke out at the school. Then, the Feb. 5 meeting was cancelled due to a snowstorm.

The Jan. 29 meeting took place without a hitch and Gail McTaggart, attorney for the applicant, said the public weighed in during that meeting for the majority of the hearing.

That brings us to today

The Zoning Commission will meet at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, at Pomperaug High School, 234 Judd Rd., Southbury.

"Under the typical hearing procedure, at tonight’s third session of the hearing, the Zoning Commissioners will finish asking any questions they may have and the applicant then will be permitted to respond to the issues and questions raised by the commissioners and the  public and to summarize before the hearing closes," McTaggart told Patch via email.

Applicant Southbury Village Square is seeking to amend the zoning regulations "for the proposed establishment of a Planned Development District (Southbury Riverview Cinema & Playhouse) for the mixed use of a commercial building to include the following," according to the meeting agenda:

  • Indoor commercial theatre
  • Table service restaurant
  • Retail uses and services
  • Residential apartments
  • Conservation/restrictive easement for property (located at 690 Main St. South and Flood Bridge Road
