According to a release from the RTC, Cooper opened the caucus by referring to a quote by current First Selectman Ed Edelson.

“This year, the Republican Town Committee decided, for reasons that are still unclear, not to recommend a slate to registered Republicans. So all nominees must be nominated from the floor. Many of us see that as a lack of enthusiasm for their candidates.”

Cooper went on to state that “the current First Selectman’s statement is not only less than accurate, it is pure partisan wishful thinking. Our caucus is about insuring an open and transparent process of selecting volunteer citizen candidates…where everyone has an equal opportunity to be heard and their vote counted. Southbury Republicans do not make their choices in the back room. We are here tonight…in the front room…out in the open,” according to the release.
