We asked Southbury Patch readers what they would like to see at the Southbury Training Center site in the future. Here's what they had to say.

After a Dec. 4 meeting on the initial results of a state-funded study of the current Southbury Training School site, we asked Southbury Patch readers this question on Facebook:

So Southbury, what would you like to see at the Southbury Training School site?

Here's what readers had to say:

  • A YMCA, a skating rink, a community theater. — Beth Steinberg Rosen
  • Indoor sports complex like NYA in Newtown. — Pam Ventresca Vagnini
  • A community recreation center with outdoor walking/running trails. — Daniel Capodicci
  • A Super Walmart...Kidding. — Jaymie Castro Batoon
  • A water park — Sean Kavanaugh
  • More clients — Mike Salese
  • @mike: Perhaps of all levels of poor mental [health] ... May actually stop some random violence like mass shootings or "the knockout game"... Cause we know more laws is a waste of time.... Crazy and or bad ppl don't care about laws — Chris Poletti
  • YMCA with a 50 meter indoor/outdoor swimming pool. — Pat Osborn
  • Indoor sports complex — Sharon Baranowski
  • YMCA! — Lisa Coville
  • Keep it what it is and stop getting rid of the mental health facilities — Shawn Detlefsen
  • Yay Shawn Detlefsen!!!! — Holly Reda Bartlett
  • Keep it a training school, stop turning a blind eye to mental health, stop saying we have a pill for that, and get to the root of the problem! We can't keep sweeping all this under the carpet or the carpet will continue to consume us as it already has started to do!! — Janelle McDougall
  • I'm [with] Janelle but I think there a lack of state funding — Travis Hatfield

What would you like to see on the site? What do you think will succeed at that location? Tell us more in the comments or post in our Speak Out board.

I bit my lip(fingertips?) earlier when this was asked... But I agree with some of the comments. I'd love to see the Southbury Training School maintain it's original goal of providing a safe and educational location for those with mental challenges. As that's unlikely to occur, I'd love for the grounds to be used for nonprofit community benefit, such as local theatre, fitness center, sustainable agriculture, etc.

The training school should stay a training school and eventually be some type of housing/care for mentally iIl patients. There would be more money if we would stop closing large facilities, which push people out into the street, (homelessness), pushing people in and out of hospital ERS, or correction facilities.
