Southbury Woman Suing Middlebury After Bike Accident

A Southbury woman is suing the Town of Middlebury, the Middlebury Land Trust and resident Toula Kaloidis for damages sustained from a bicycle accident on the path in September.

According to documents filed with the Middlebury Town Clerk and Waterbury Superior Court, on Sept. 22, while riding on a portion of the trail near Tranquility Road owned by Kaloidis, Bonnie Beck hit a pothole, “causing her to lose control of her bicycle, fly over her handlebars and violently slam onto the greenway head first,” cracking her helmet and wrecking her bike.

Beck claims to have suffered a fractured vertebrae; head, neck and back injuries; multiple scars, cuts, abrasions and contusions to her arms, legs and face; general shock to the nervous system; and pain and suffering, both mental and physical.

Aside from “extreme physical pain,” the filing also requests compensation for medical expenses, time lost during a week’s confinement in her home and $500 in damage to her bicycle “as a result of the negligence of the defendant[s].”

Beck is suing for damages in excess of $15,000.

Middlebury Administrative Manager Bill Stowell said the case has been given to the town’s insurance carrier, which will handle it moving forward.
