Third Parties Participating in Presidential Debate

Barack Obama and Mitt Romney will not be at the Oct. 23 debate, but four other presidential candidates will be.

Barack Obama and Mitt Romney may get all the headlines for their debates, but the nation’s third parties will be sharing their views on war, the economy and other issues at an alternative presidential debate scheduled for Oct. 23. Former CNN host Larry King will be moderating.

The Free and Equal Election Foundation sponsored the debate as a response to the presidential debates, which favor Democrats and Republicans while excluding third parties. According to the foundation, the restrictive rules “sanitize debates, disregard viable third-party and independent candidates, and prohibit participation in other independent debates.”

Participating candidates include:

Gary Johnson, Libertarian Party
Jill Stein, Green Party
Virgil Goode, Constitution Party
Rocky Anderson, Justice Party

The Oct. 23 debate begins at 9 p.m. and will be broadcast online from Chicago.
