Tired of Power Struggles with Your Child?

We had power struggles over when to do homework.  One of our sons liked to do it immediately, which is what I wanted.  The other wanted to watch TV and relax first, and we always fought over him getting it done first.

We need to understand our child, ourselves, and the situation first!

We want our children to learn to think for themselves, yet too often we think for them, especially in ways that they can safely have a say, like what to wear.  We want them to develop a healthy self-esteem, yet we don't give them the chance to experience their own capability, which is a big part of developing healthy self-esteem.

So, in the example of what to wear, as early as possible, let them choose their own clothes.  As you cringe with their choice, ask yourself, "Is it more important that their clothing is color coordinated, or that they are capable and confident?"  Allow them to go shopping with you and make some choices within your budget.  Together, make a list of what they need in advance - how many pairs of pants, shirts, shoes, socks, underwear, and help them figure out how much they have to spend so they know that if they spend too much on one item, they have to give up another item.  This is great training for when they eventually will be on their own!
