BOE Taking Up Proposal to Name PHS Gym After Dr. Sippy

The proposal will be taken up during a meeting Monday night.

If the Region 15 Board of Education looks favorably upon a motion Monday night, the Pomperaug High School gym will become known as the Frank H. Sippy Gymnasium.

The motion, a recommendation by the Finance and Facilities Committee, is on the agenda for the Region 15 BOE meeting on Monday, Nov. 4, at 7:30 p.m. in AP Room No. 103 at PHS.

The latest proposal comes five months after Sippy, the longtime school superintendent, respectfully declined a move to rename Pomperaug Elementary School after him. He did so a few days after a resident started an online petition opposing the idea.

At that time, a statement issued by the district read in part: "Dr. Sippy was humbled by the Board's gesture but felt it was in the best interest of the Region for the school to remain known as Pomperaug Elementary School.”
Sippy was named the Connecticut Public School Superintendent of the Year in 2009. He retired this year, and was replaced by Regina L. Botsford, who took over as superintendent on Oct. 1.
