Eighty Southbury Students to Receive Backpacks, School Supplies

"Operation Backpack" will supply Southbury students in need with supplies for the upcoming school year.

When the last day of school finally comes, parents are thrilled to be “taking a break” from the school year hustle and bustle, but that’s exactly when the Southbury Women’s Club (SWC) starts getting ready for the first day of school in the fall.

Before the start of school, the club will assemble approximately 80 backpacks filled with school supplies for local Southbury children in need.  This year the Mustard Seed Fund has contributed to cover a portion of the expenses for this project. The club is still relying on the residents of Southbury to contribute in an effort to meet the need for every local child, according to the SWC.

Currently there are jars placed at cash registers in stores around the community including at Patty’s Pantry, Southbury Labonne’s and Leo’s.

“Please keep an eye open, and when you see one of the jars, consider the less fortunate and remember that no amount is too small,” said SWC member Kristen Funk. “It all adds up for a good cause.”

SWC is also seeking sponsors for this cause. Business interested in contributing can contact Funk at 203-219-0478.  Donations can be sent directly to Southbury Women’s Club, ATTN: Operation Backpack, P.O. Box 195, Southbury, CT 06488.
