The excitement starts with Connor Jones leading us off in the face off, opening the doors to a season of promise. This game exhibited the unpronounced possibilities the Pomperaug Junior Varsity lacrosse team have in store for us.  Athletes like Seamus Conway and Wylie Walker simply pushing the opponents out of their way to accomplish   getting to the goal, left this to be a game we could not help but pay attention to.   Unbelievable defense by Witek and Pelczar made it strenuous for Bunnel’s players to get near our goal.  With Cantor’s stick checking techniques and the stealing talents of Thalheimer and Garret, the opponents’ heads were left in a tailspin. Mitch Davis is also like that of a thief, the way he stole the ball away only to let someone like Pendergast scoop the ball up, turn and strategically place a well deserved goal. An unforeseen blow to the goal then followed this by Russo with the astounding assist from Holguin. AMAZING to witness! As for our goalie #8, he takes 7 shots on him spitting back all but 1 to the competition. Way to be Giardina!  In the 2nd half of the game, Moosey blocks an intimidating shot without a blink of an eye while Pope and Gustenhoven snag up the balls before anyone even knew they were in air.  Again, jersey number 14 A.K.A. “The Plow”, paves his own path to his mission of getting the ball down field. Roper gets robbed of a shot he deserved.  Second half goalie Nevers, protects his goal against 6 attempts letting only one by…just for good sportsmanship. Hurley runs the ball down field passing it to Roper achieving a joint, team effort for our 8th goal.  Walker smacks down a goalie pass and McDougal scoops and runs with the ball to end  the game with Pomperaug’s 8 goals vs. Bunnel’s  2.  What a night! The JV athletes earned this victory. It must have been something in the windy air that night because their Varsity brothers followed in this very same path.  Head Coach Joseph Perreault and Assistant Coach Mason Banwe1l have proven that they must be doing something right.  We’re lucky to have them.

Game 2

A storm swept across the JV Pomperaug Lacrosse home field on April 12th.

Just like the powerful athletes that stormed onto the field. No one had any idea of what was in store for this evening.  The Stratford goalies got a lot of practice as Garret, Roper, Strakosch, Davis, Pope, Walker, and Holguin produced goal after goal. The skies were troubled as the game proceeded with Christopher Horn surviving a Stratford sandwich body check and Quentin Norris coming to the rescue with his excellent “catch and run” tactics followed by Christopher Azar-Brandes’s awesome assist to good old Max for our 11th goal. Gustenhoven displays first-class defense against our contenders. Number 27-Russo had a good recover to follow through to an admirable left-handed attempt to score.  JV’s goalie, Zac nicknamed by the coaches  "The Brick Wall”, dismissed the 6 shots on him letting Stratford know that there is “ No Goals On My Clock”.  Christian Clarke gets MVP for this game due to winning all of the face off’s. Exactly how do you do that???  Nick Boland and Matt Witek both come in with “Honorable Mentions” for their display of superior defense. Let’s not leave out #9-Caleb Saleeby, who knows how to snag the ball and set up the next baited goal.  Kaufman exhibited true talent when he scoops and runs to the goal being the lead assistant not once, but twice during the game. Thalheimer, Pelzar and Strakosch take some powerful hits for the team. Those are some strong men. Where exactly did the JV coaches recruit them from?  Let’s not leave out 2nd half goalie, Nevers, whose performance shined of an amazing save and an excellent pass up field.    Final Score: Pomperaug 13 vs Stratford 2. As the skies blared with the sun and then down poured with the rain… this evening was full of surprises.

Game 3

Pomperaug vs. Carmel.                                                             4/14/12

BRING IT ON!

After 2 tremendous wins, today Pomperaug JV lax team experienced a disappointing loss. Carmel played …good. It’s not to say we did not have some impressive moves of our own. Walker and Conway showed consistent visions of getting the ball down field.  Connor J and Matt W smacked down a couple goal attempts.  #23 was able to balance himself on the inbound line for more than half the field while Carmel tried their very best to push him out the entire time.  REMARKABLE!  Way to stay focused!!!  There were 2 exceptional attempts to score by Pope and McDougal.  If at first you don’t succeed, TRY and TRY again. Walker, once again, steals the ball and passes to his teammates as they settle up around the opponent’s goal. Together they passed and played out their plan. A pass goes back to Walker as he cuts in and SCORES. Nice Job All Around! Today’s salutes goes to both goalies.  Nevers showcased his talents to protect his goal with 12 shots against him only allowing 3 goals through during the first half. Now that’s impressive! Following this display of aptitude comes the second half results with our freshman goalie, Giardina, deflecting 16 shots on him with 4 slithering into our goal.  All I can say is “Wow”. The ending score was Pomperaug 1 vs. Carmel 7.  The team itself was absent of their true value. Each and every player has so much to offer to the game.  The goalies need their defensemen’s help just as much as the defensemen need their goalies. The middies and attacks need to collaborate and out smart their opponents so that they can make the goals that they are so capable of getting.   Every player’s position is an important one and has so much to bring to the table.  What we, the fans, would like to see in the upcoming games would be that you…BRING IT ON!!!!!!
