Southbury Land Trust Hike & History Tour

Hike With a Twist of History

On Sunday, October 9, the Southbury Land Trust will hold an event in conjunction with the Southbury Historical Society.    The afternoon begins with a hike of the Southbury Land Trust’s Ivers Preserve.  These lovely woodlands are perfect for autumn leaf peeping.  Although, there are some hilly spots, the hike is of moderate intensity.  Hikers should keep in mind that the terrain can be muddy and there are still ticks about, so please dress appropriately.

After working up an appetite on the trails, the attendees will regroup at the Southbury Historical Society’s Ludorf Barn, where a bounty of local apples, cookies and beverages await.  This is an excellent opportunity to see this extraordinary structure built in 1820 and almost completely restored in the past three years.  There are many treasures stored in the barn but the focus will be on one item in particular.  Fresh back from restoration at the Amish Leola Coach Shop is the original buckboard, a four-wheeled wagon, that John Ludorf used to deliver milk to the train station for transport to the city.

The afternoon will conclude with a tribute to Mark Manville for his many years of service to the Southbury Land Trust.  Mark is equally active with the Southbury Historical Society, so it’s only fitting that this tribute take place in the beautiful Ludorf Barn, up on West Purchase Road.

The event is open to the public and is free.

Participants should meet at the Southbury Town Hall lower parking lot at 1:30p.m. for carpooling to the event.  Or, if preferrable, they can park near the barn and join the group then. For further details, directions, or in case of rain, call the Southbury Land Trust office at (203)264-4441
