PHS Teams Earn Spots in State Tournaments

The CIAC released brackets for State Tournament play Wednesday.

Boy’s Soccer:

The Pomperaug Boy’s Soccer team, which dropped their first game of the season this week in the South West Conference championship game, comes into the state tournament as the top seed in Class ‘LL’.

The Panthers have received a bye in the first round and will face the winner of #16 Hamden (11-5-0) and #17 Greenwich (9-4-3) on Monday, November 14 at 2 p.m. The top two teams in the bracket received byes, seconded seeded Norwich Free Academy (13-1-1) also earned a free pass to the second round.

If PHS gets past their first game, they could see a familiar foe in their quarterfinal match. SWC rival Newtown (11-2-2) is in the Panthers half of the bracket and if the Nighthawks get by their first two opponents it could be a rematch for a spot in the state semifinals. Pomperaug beat Newtown 1-0 in an early season matchup.

Girl’s Soccer:

The first eight teams in the 24-team Class ‘L’ Girl’s Soccer field will all earn byes in the first round this year. #6 Pomperaug (10-3-3) will be among that group and await the winner of #11 Bacon Academy (7-3-3) and #22 Plat (7-7-2).

PHS will host the winner in a quarterfinals match on Saturday, November 12 at 2 p.m. If the Panthers get past their first opponent they could see perennial NVL power #3 Watertown (13-2-1) in the state quarterfinals.

The top seed in the Class ‘L’ bracket is once-beaten Sacred heart Academy (14-1-1). PHS is joined in the bracket by fellow SWC schools #4 Joel Barlow (12-2-2), #12 Bethel (8-4-4), #17 Brookfield (7-5-4) and #23 New Fairfield (7-8-1).

Volleyball:

#11 Pomperaug (12-6) was the last team in a 21-team field to earn a bye in the Class ‘L’ Volleyball State Tournament. The Panthers will travel to #6 Branford (15-3) on Saturday, November 12 at 1 p.m. for their second round matchup. Branford also received a first round bye.

The top seed in the Class ‘L’ bracket is RHAM (16-2). #13 Bunnel (12-6) and #19 Stratford (8-10) are the other schools representing the SWC in the field.

Field Hockey:

The Pomperaug Field Hockey team has a tough task if they want to make some noise in the Class ‘M’ bracket. The #17 Panthers (5-8-1-2) must win a play-in game at #16 E.O Smith (7-9-0-0) this afternoon at 2 p.m. just to make it into the field.

If the Panthers get by E.O. Smith there will be no time to rest, as top seeded and unblemished Darien (16-0-0-0) will be awaiting the winner the very next day, Friday, December 11 at 2 p.m.

#15 Sheehan (6-7-2-1) and number #18 Watertown (5-8-1-1) will faceoff today in the other play-in game. SWC foes #5 New Fairfield (14-2-0-0) and #6 Joel Barlow (12-2-2-0) are also in the field.
