Girl’s Soccer

#6 PHS Girl’s Soccer team notched a hard fought victory over #11 Bacon Academy 1-0 at home Saturday. The match was scoreless after regulation and extra time and was decided in penalty kicks, 5-4.

The Panthers now face off against #19 RHAM (10-6-2) today in a quarterfinal match at 2 p.m. at Pomperaug.

RHAM beat #3 Watertown 3-0 to advance to the quarterfinal match. The top seed in the Class ‘L’ field, Sacred Heart Academy, also made an early exit from the tournament when they were beat 3-2 by #17 Brookfield Saturday.

Volleyball

After earning a first round bye #11 Pomperaug Volleyball traveled to #6 Branford Saturday and rolled over the higher seed 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-16).

The Panthers will look to spoil another higher seeds tournament hopes today when they visit #3 Woodstock Academy (17-2) at 2 p.m. for a spot in the Class ‘L’ state semifinals. Pomperaug is the highest remaining seed left in the field.

Woodstock Academy had a first round bye, and in the second round trounced South West Conference school Stratford 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-16).

Field Hockey

The #17 PHS Field Hockey squad had a short run in the Class ‘M’ state tournament as the Panthers bid ended in the first round Saturday.

Pomperaug did notch a victory in the play-in round 1-0 over #16 E.O Smith to earn a spot in the playoff field. Their glory was short lived though, as their season came to an abrupt end Friday when they fell to top seeded Darien 4-0.
