Southbury SportsBeat: Sports-A-Palooza II

Mike Olt of is in the midst of one of the most impressive power shows in professional baseball. The former had belted two home runs in each of his last three games while driving in nine runs. The six homer outburst has vaulted Olt to the top the Texas League with 17 home runs. His .318 average currently ranks second in the league. 

(Trumbull) graduate James Campbell has also been on quite a roll. The junior pitcher at Stony Brook was named the most outstanding player in the America East conference tournament. In the NCAA regionals in Miami, Campell appeared in the the first three games of the tournament for Stony Brook, giving up no earned runs in five innings of work.

TRIO FROM NAUGATUCK EXCEL IN TRIATHLON

Naugatuck had a strong showing in the Rev3 Olympic triathlon in Middlebury on Saturday. , who is one of the best young triathletes in the country, came in third place with a time of 2:16:37. He was first in his division (20-24 years old). Karim Mabrook came in tenth place overall and first in his division (25-29 years old) with a time of 2:19:18. In the women's division, Cassandra Maximenko took second overall and was first in her age group (25-29) with a time of 2:24:16. Jeanne Theleen of Southbury placed sixth overall and first in her age group (20-24) with a time of 2:31:54.

HIGH SCHOOL HEROES

I'm not sure there is a player more valuable to their team than of Foran. The sophomore left-handed pitcher is 22-1 for the top-ranked team in Class L (24-1) and she tossed a 2-hit shutout while striking out 10 against Wethersfield in the Class L quarterfinals last week.

of Darien High School recorded five goals and four assists in the Blue Wave's quarterfinal win over Masuk. Darien's all-time leading scorer has 99 points in 18 games and should go over the century mark in Wednesday's Class M semifinal game against .

The pursuit of perfection ended for the girls tennis team at . The Cardinals who were 22-0 and had beaten twice already, lost to the Rams, 4-3 in the finals of the Class L championship. New Canaan has won nine consecutive state titles in tennis. The Rams finished the season with a 21-2 record.

The boys volleyball teams at Cheshire High School and appear to be on a collision course. Both have reached the semifinals in the Class L state playoffs. and dating back to last year, have won 43 consecutive matches. The Wreckers are 17-0 and only Ridgefield stands between them and a trip to the state championship. Cheshire takes on Glastonbury in the semifinals.

A QUICK TWO FOR AVON OLD FARMS?

If the Los Angeles Kings go on to win the Stanley Cup, Milford native is a lock to win the Conn Smythe trophy as the MVP of the playoffs. If that happens, Avon Old Farms will hold the distinction of producing to Conn Symthe trophy winners. Brian Leetch of Cheshire won the award while leading the New York Rangers to a victory in the Stanley Cup finals in 1994.

TIGER CATCHES THE BEAR WITH NEWTON'S LaCava

Tiger Woods captured The Memorial on Sunday to tie Jack Nicklaus with 73 PGA victories and Joe LaCava on Newtown helped make it happen. LaCava has been Tiger's caddie for over a year and on his bag for two of those 73 victories.
