Karma: What goes around comes around

The act of Karma and how having compassion can improve your standing with the universe.

By Thea Tragni

Most people refrain from breaking all of their annoying neighbor’s windows because of the consequences that would come from such an action. The police could be called, arrest would follow or something even worse could happen. That person's standing with the universe could be tarnished.

Buddhists believe in the power that “Karma” holds. The chain reaction that an immoral deed can have might be devastating. “Any action is understood as creating "seeds" in the mind that will sprout into the appropriate result.” If you do good things, good things will come back to you. If you perpetually do bad things bad things will come back to you. What you do is directly liked to the result you receive from doing that action.

"In this world nothing happens to a person that he does not for some reason or other deserve." Everything that happens to a person in his or her life is what they deserve from the actions that they have themselves done.

Karma is just one of the topics that The Dalai Lama will most likely touch on in his talk. The act of compassion can directly help your karma. When you are more compassionate about the people around you, better things will come back to you.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama will speak on Oct. 18 and 19 at Western Connecticut State University, and the public is invited to a free showing (video simulcast) in the Ives Concert Hall, 181 White St. To help promote this opportunity, WCSU students in the Writing, Linguistics and Creative Process Department's Advertising, Copywriting and Promotions class created a Twitter page. and they are writing this blog daily.

Holy cow! Have a man designated "His Holiness" by the Chinese Communist government, and have him come talk to American students about what? Socialism? Paganism? What kind of American institute is this?
