Local Church Makes “Comfort Caps” for Cancer Patients

Hats were sent to cancer patients at Harold Leever Regional Cancer Center in Waterbury.

More than a dozen women from the United Church of Christ, Southbury, gathered in the church social hall on Saturday, Jan. 28, to construct “comfort caps” for cancer patients at Harold Leever Regional Cancer Center in Waterbury.

Under the direction of chairman Kim Friend, the women cut, sewed, pinned, ironed and stitched more than 70 caps, which were then delivered to the center in early February.

Made from colorful cotton prints and lined with soft cotton knit jersey, the caps are intended to bring lightweight warmth to heads that have temporarily lost their covering of hair due to chemotherapy.

The making of the caps has been an annual project at UCC Southbury for ten years, and began when Carol Schmidt, a church member, read a story about comfort caps and sent away for the pattern.  She contacted the Leever Center and a partnership was formed.
