Southbury Community Comes Together for Children's Holiday Program

Several toy drives help hundreds in Southbury.

The community of Southbury came together to help make Christmas 2011 brighter for 194 children from 92 Southbury needy families.  The families on the list received presents of new clothing, toys and as needed, winter jackets, boots, shoes and blankets for their children.

The Southbury Needy Fund,  a non-profit organization, receives monetary donations along with new clothing and toys from many generous residents, town organizations, churches and businesses.  Space for the sorting of the gifts at the Union Square was provided by Marc Greenberg and Marc Katz .   

Two very successful toy drives were held by the Southbury Police Department.  In addition, Toy Drives were held by students at several local schools, Savings Bank of Danbury, Hen of the Woods, Romatic Industries and Lake Wine and Spirits.  The Main Street Ballet Company held a toy drive with the Pomperaug High School Honor Society and Southbury Brown Troop 64103  The Reeder Family donated new children’s books in loving memory of their son, Shawn.

In addition the Women’s Club of Heritage Village held a highly successful Toy and Clothing Drive with their Annual Giving Tree event.

The Needy Fund is an on-going fund to help people in need when there are no other programs available.  The Social Services Department at the Town Hall sends referrals to the Fund for assistance with insurance payments, electric, telephone and water bills, medical, pharmacy, security deposit, car, well and furnace repairs. In addition, the fund works with Southbury schools to provide monetary help to students whose parents cannot afford to send their children on school trips or pay for dental or eye examinations.
