Southbury Needy Fund Accepting Gifts for Christmas Program

Over 85 Southbury families are in need this holiday season.

Press Release

The Southbury Needy Fund Christmas gift program for Southbury’s needy children is now underway.  For over 30 years the fund has coordinated new clothing and toys for needy children.  The program has received a list of 85 needy families with over 180 children, and according to Social Services more families will be added.

The Town’s Social Services Director, Sandy Saren, provides the Fund with the children eligible for the program.  The Fund then goes out to the community who has made the program an overwhelming success each year by donations of new clothing or monetary contributions.

Support is received from many wonderful residents, as well as churches, all the offices in the town hall, many community organizations and businesses such as banks, real estate offices, doctor’s offices, beauty salons and restaurants.

The Heritage Village Women’s Club will again sponsor their “Giving Tree”.   Each Christmas the children on the Needy Fund list receive new outfits, pajamas, sweaters, winter hats and mittens and toys.   Special needs such as winter coats, snow pants, winter boots, shoes and blankets are also provided.

The Southbury Needy Fund operates on a year-round basis providing emergency services to Southbury residents when there are no other sources available. The Jewelry Café just had a very successful fundraiser with the proceeds being designated for the Hurricane Irene flood victims. The Christmas gift program, however, continues to be the focal point of the fund.

As in the past, 100 percent of the money and gifts collected go to the families in need and all administrative services are donated.

Donations to the Fund can be sent to the Southbury Needy Fund, Inc., P. O. Box 72, Southbury, CT 06488.  Anyone interested in buying clothing for a child on the list can call Sharon Lieber at 264-8743 or via e-mail at Southbury1@aol.com.
