Southbury Resident Files Petition: Keep PES' Name the Same

special Region 15 Board of Education meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 19, at Rochambeau Middle School, to vote on changing Pomperaug Elementary School's name to Dr. Frank Sippy Elementary School.

Southbury resident William Navas filed a petition on the Change.org website asking the Region 15 Board of Education to refrain from changing Pomperaug Elementary School's name.

As of 5 p.m. Saturday, June 15, 190 people signed the petition. Two people commented on the petition.

Jason Rodgers wrote that he admires Dr. Sippy for his years of service and the superintendent deserves to be honored in some way.

"What should have been considered and was not, is that we are a small community with roots that run deep and we think tradition and history should be honored," Rodgers wrote on the Change.org website. "There is no reason to change the name of the school. There are surely many other ways that we can appropriately honor Dr. Sippy. Renaming Central Office would be a nice gesture and surely much less controversial."

Don Winter wrote that the Board of Education is forcing its will against the people he supported over the years.

"He [Sippy] deserves to be celebrated, not resisted," Winter wrote on the Change.org website.
