Edelson Re-elected But Republicans Pick Up Majorities [Updated]

The Democrat incumbent secures two more years, while Republicans take control of the Board of Selectmen and Board of Finance.

Update as of 12:15 a.m. on Nov. 6:

Democrats may have retained the seat at the top of the ticket, but Republicans came out of Election Day with the majority on two key boards.

Ed Edelson secured another two years as Southbury's first selectman, fending off a challenge from Republican John Monteleone. The Democrat garnered 2,593 votes compared to Monteleone's 2,164, according to unofficial results that did not include absentee ballots.

While the news of defeat in that race left Republican campaign headquarters quiet, the mood became more upbeat as results showed that the party picked up control of the Board of Selectmen and the Board of Finance.

"This is very unexpected," Monteleone said.

Along with Edelson, the other Democrat on the Board of Selectmen will be Donna Pereira, who secured 2,139 votes, according to unofficial results. The four Republicans on the Board of Selectmen and their unofficial vote totals are:

  • John Monteleone (2,164)
  • Chad Landmon (2,308)
  • Jennifer O'Neill (2,376)
  • Ken Korsu (2,325)

Also in the race for Board of Selectmen, Ronald Pugliese garnered 2,135 votes and Edward Gittines 2,027, according to unofficial results.

Complete Election Day results in all races will be published as soon as the information is available from town hall.
