Southbury Kmart Latest Target in False Bomb Threats

The evacuation of the store on Friday evening was something several other towns have experienced recently.

A bomb threat called in to the Kmart in Southbury Friday night was but the latest in what appears to be an ongoing campaign.

Friday's threat led to the evacuation of the Kmart at 100 Main St. North at about 5 p.m. The store reopened a few hours later after police conducted a search of the area and found no evidence of a bomb.

According to a report by WFSB, citing police, a caller threatened to blow up the store if the employee did not load a disposable debit card with an undisclosed amount of money.

That threat took place just a few days after a similar one was made in Wall, NJ. And, according to numerous media outlets, is a scam targeting major retailers that's been popping up around the U.S. in recent years, even back to 2007.
