Sippy Declines School Proposal

Retiring Superintendent of Schools Dr. Frank Sippy declined an offer by the Region 15 Board of Education to rename Pomperaug Elementary School in Southbury in his name.

A statement issued on the region’s website this afternoon stated the following:

“After much personal reflection Dr. Sippy has respectfully declined the Board's offer to rename Pomperaug Elementary School in his honor. Dr. Sippy was humbled by the Board's gesture but felt it was in the best interest of the Region for the school to remain known as Pomperaug Elementary School.”

A Southbury resident who was opposed to the action filed a petition last week asking the board to refrain from changing PES’s name. The petition has over 375 signatures.

A special board meeting was scheduled for Wednesday, June 19 to discuss this matter, but due to Sippy’s decision the meeting is now cancelled, according to the region.
